Amazon Mechanical Turk Review – Can You Make Good Money As a Worker?

Back when I was a newbie and trying to make money online, I came across micro working sites. These websites want you to do small tasks and in return earn a small amount of money for your efforts.

The one I tried many years ago was not Mechanical Turk and I actually did make money with it.

But today I want to talk about Amazons Mechanical Turk and explain exactly how it works and how much money you can make.

Keep reading this review to find the truth.

Can Make Some Money But Is It Really Worth It?
  • Legitimacy
  • Earnings Potential
  • Growth Potential
  • Customer Service

With Amazons MTurk you will certainly make money but it’s not going to provide you with that “wow” factor.

You can make at least $10 per day if you spend a few hours on it each day but don’t expect to quit your job completing small tasks.

It is a decent venture to get into if you’re wanting to supplement your main source of income but definitely NOT what I recommend as there are much better alternatives out there.

  • Payments go straight to your bank account (if you’re in the US) or Amazon account if you’re international
  • A viable side hustle to make money in your spare time. Money definitely can be made with MTurk and it’s easy money which is a good thing
  • A wide variety of tasks available 24/7. This offers a flexible work schedule so you can choose your own hours

  • Not going to replace your normal 9-5 job for most people. Even if you tried, eventually you’ll get burnt out and give up altogether
  • Sometimes work is slow and there’ll be low paying jobs available only. This can hurt overall earnings by a lot
  • It is really time consuming and consumes a lot of mental brain power since the tasks are boring
  • Many complaints about doing a lot of work but receiving low compensation for your efforts

Quick Look

Name: Mechanical Turk

What You’ll Be Doing: Micro tasks

Price to Join: Free

Payments To: Bank account (US residents) or Amazon account (International)

The Claims

Amazon claim the tasks you’ll be doing are interesting and not boring.

They claim even though computers do a lot of automation these days, there are still a wide range of things humans can do better and more effectively.

Crowd-sourcing is a way to allow that to happen.

And that’s who you are if you’re trying to make money with MTurk.

You are part of the crowd completing tasks, but more on that in a second.

About Mechanical Turk

Mechanical Turk is owned Amazon – obviously – and offers a place for companies to get small jobs done that computers cannot do yet.

It’s so companies can get things done without hiring a contractor or paying a hefty price employing someone.

It was first launched in 2005 according to Wikipedia and soon became incredibly popular.

They used their already established reputation to create something for everyone, and it worked.

So What Is Mechanical Turk?

So as stated above, it is a website for business owners and big companies to get small tasks done as easily and effortlessly as possible.

But if you landed on this page you’re probably not here for that, you’re probably interested in making money so that’s what I want to focus on today.

Once a business owner submits a HIT (Human Intelligence Task) to the website, it is an opportunity for someone to make money.

Oftentimes they want many tasks done at once, which gives an opportunity for many people to earn money.

One thing I found interesting is that if lots of people click on the task at the same time but the requester only wanted 1, everyone gets paid for it!

The Jobs You’ll Be Doing

Lets face it.

Humans are still much more intelligent than computers and robots.

There are specific things we can do more effectively because we are much more smarter.

The jobs you will be doing range from identifying objects in a photo or video, data de-duplication, transcribing audio recordings, researching data and much more.

The Process/How You Make Money

First and foremost you’ll have to create an account over at:

Once you finish the sign up process you will be taken to a page that looks like this:

On the left hand side of the image above, you’ll see the name of the HIT for you to complete.

On the right hand side is all the details of that task.

HIT = How much requests left for that task

Reward = How much you’ll earn for completing that task

Created = The date the task was created

Actions = Accept & begin working on that task

You can also preview the task before you accept it, which is a good feature so you know the difficult level and whether you can complete it in a timely manner or not.

How Much Money Can You Realistically Earn?

One thing I like about Mechanical Turk is that you can complete the tasks over and over again if there’s enough available and continuously earn money.

This is great if you find one particular HIT easier from the rest and there’s a lot available.

Which there usually is; there’s thousands available all the time.

In the screenshot above I showed, you there was 65,000 HITs on one task!

Amazon Mechanical Turk cheat-sheet to save you time from completing the lowest paying tasks

According to reviews and feedback around the internet, transcribing audio recordings provides the lowest pay which is around $2 per hour plus a bonus of $1.

Completing surveys will earn you roughly $6 per hour and performing Google searches will earn you around a remarkable $15 per hour!

Of course these are all estimates and not exact numbers.

Keep in mind that distractions matter a lot too so you have to keep those to a bare minimum if you want to make these figures.

You can also join the Reddit group dedicated to Mechanical Turk workers!

How to find what earns you the most money

The best way to find out what earns you the most money is to perform a certain type of task in increments of 30 minutes.

For example:

Do surveys for 30 minutes without any distractions. Telly up the money you earn in that 30 minutes and then write it down.

Do another task such as “extracting items from a receipt” for another 30 minutes.

If that earns you more, then you know to go for the receipt jobs over the survey jobs every time they show up.

It’s not just about completing tasks willy-nilly, the best way is to figure out the best money makers so you’re not wasting your time earning pennies.

Is Mechanical Turk a Scam? (The Verdict)

When you first start out, you’ll be receiving tasks that don’t provide high earnings.

Meaning you’ll be earning around $1-3 per hour until you learn the ropes and qualify for the higher paying jobs.

That is just the nature of the game.

If you’re looking for flexible hours and don’t mind putting in hours of work consistently to earn a good income, then MTurk is for you.

If you’re looking to make a few dollars for your beer money, then it is also for you.

If you’re wanting to make a lot of money so you can quit your job, then it is not for you because that’s not going to happen.

Other than that, Amazon do pay you for the tasks you do, on-time and every time, and they have your best interest at heart.

Amazons Mechanical Turk is not a scam you can definitely make money completing tasks

What You Should Really Do

I refuse to invest hours of my time to earn a few dollars.

That’s not going to offer you freedom because at the end of the day, money buys more time for you to spend however you please.

My recommendation allowed me to quit my job and work from home full-time.

Whereas if you keep slaving away at Amazons Mechanical Turk, you’ll continue making a few dollars every month to supplement your income.

F that!

But of course that’s just my advice and this is what I prefer and recommend instead.

I hope you found what you were looking for in this review and that you too can find some type of success.

Well thanks for reading and have a great day!

  1. Before, I was fond of working with sites that pay like you’re working a day job. You exchange your time and efforts and expected to be paid in cents or a dollar per hour, and sometimes per task. It only changed when I read about the secrets of the rich, that the rich don’t work for money but make their money work for them. Working for sites like Amazon Mechanical Turk is like working for money which is a game most poor people play.

If you wanna get rich online, you should build a business like the one you are recommending in your link. I’d rather work building an online business than exchange my time for money in working sites like Amazon Mechanical Turk.

By the way, may I ask, are they still working these days? I have some friends here in my country that no matter what I try to explain that making your money work for you is a better option than working for money, they still prefer the old way. To the people who are looking for such opportunities, if Amazon Mechanical Turk is accepting applicants from the Philippines, then I’ll recommend the site to them.

    • Definitely a good way to look at it Gomer, one good reason why I am not getting involved in Mechanical Turk and never will.

However, don’t get me wrong, it’s a great concept and an easy way to make money but it’s not the type of breakthrough that’s going to allow you to quit your day job.

And yes, Amazons MTurk is still very much active.

I only recommend it if you’re looking for some beer money, otherwise opt for bigger and better opportunities like your own online business.

  2. Hi Brandin,

Thanks a lot for this review and knowing that it is something that you have actually ever done by yourself, you make this very trustworthy.

Personally I’ve never done anything through Amazon Turk but I believe it’s because of geographical location. The service is not available here- unless things have changed recently. However, I do understand concepts like transcribing which I’ve done in the past and 1h of audio is no joke transcribing. One can easily get a burn out plus heaps of frustration especially for  non-natives of the language of the audio. I’m interested in that Google search for $15/h. That’s pretty off the hook! Searching for such a high pay is yet to be common internationally.

    Keep the reviews coming.

    • I have not done transcribing but it sounds interesting how quickly you can get burnt out. Thanks for sharing your experiences Boniface.

  3. Hiya Brandon

Go the Kiwis! $10 as day for a few hours seems a bit much. Then again, how about getting the tasks and assigning them to a VA. Could you make money that way? Then you could get on with more lucrative business instead. yes people are still more intelligent than computers. But for how long? Job Quitters Unite. Love it! Take it easy Mate.

    • Yes go the kiwis! Lol.

Unfortunately you cannot outsource the tasks because you have to accept the task before you can begin working on it.

Plus you have to be logged in to your own account.

So it’s not actually possible to make it into a real business.

      Good luck, Andy.

  4. Hello Brandon, I think it is really nice that Amazon has brought up this good platform to help people make some extra cash. I think I can use mechanical Turk to do some of this jobs and make a few bucks. I really do have a few hours to spare everyday and I think I should make good use of it by doing this simple tasks. Thanks for this informative post.

    • It is very nice since Amazon is trusted by everyone, making the need to search for its legitimacy out of the question.

You can make some good money for your beer money or funding your online business, however, be prepared to work for hours before making any decent money.

      Good luck mate.
